What information is required for a domain transfer?

Before you order a domain transfer, you should make sure you have the necessary information ready.

Updated over a week ago

1 - Domain name

What is the domain name you wish to order? Please be especially careful not to make any typos in the domain name, as subsequent changes are not possible.

2 - Domain owner

Are you the current owner of the domain? A transfer may only be carried out by the domain owner. If you are interested in purchasing a domain that has already been registered, please contact the current owner.

Please note that you can only initiate a transfer if you are the owner of the domain or have the owner's consent.

The owner information is very important, as the domain owner/OwnerC is liable for any legal issues. The following owner information should be diligently provided when ordering.

  • First Name:

  • Last Name:

  • (Company:)

  • Address:

  • Postal Code:

  • City:

  • Country:

  • Email Address:

  • Phone Number:

Please note that some TLDs (top-level domains) require additional information about the owner, such as the VAT number, passport number, or date of birth. If we need further information for the transfer or registration, we will of course contact you.

3 - AUTH Code

The AUTH code (authorization code, AuthInfo, AuthInfo code) is used as the "key" for the transfer for most TLDs (top-level domains).

You will usually receive the AUTH code via your current provider's customer portal. Please note that an AUTH code is not valid indefinitely – for .at domains, for example, the validity period is 21 days from creation.

4 - DNS Settings

A list of your current DNS settings is essential for us to properly process the transfer for you. Of course, the default settings such as @, MX, or www can be read, but important settings could be lost in the process.

The best practice here would be to send us a list of your current DNS settings via email to [email protected]. This is the only way to ensure that no settings are lost and that the domain resolves as desired after the transfer.

5 - Transfer Lock & Restriction Period

Before ordering the transfer, make sure that the transfer lock has been deactivated with your current provider. Please note that a transfer lock is not available for all TLDs:

  • .com - Transfer lock must be lifted

  • .net - Transfer lock must be lifted

  • .at - Transfer lock is not supported

It's also possible that your domain is still in the restriction period. A restriction period is a period of time after a domain's registration or transfer during which the domain may not be transferred (i.e., may not change registrar) according to ICANN's transfer policies. This period is 60 days for most ICANN-controlled registries. The restriction period is technically controlled by the registry, and any transfer request for a domain within this period will be rejected by the registry.
