How can I change the nameservers of my domain?

Use our nameservers or set external nameservers

Updated over a week ago

1 - Log in to the customer portal

To change the nameservers, first log in to our customer portal at terminal.internex.com.

2 - Select a cloud

Click "Select this cloud" for the corresponding cloud.

3 - Domain Manager Pro

Click "Domain & E-Mail" -> "Domain Manager Pro" in the menu at the top.

4 - Select a domain

Click on the domain where you want to make the change.

5 - "Nameservers" option

Select "Nameservers" in the domain menu. Then click "Custom DNS" and deactivate the slider for "Use Internex Nameservers."

Now you can change the Nameservers to your custom-servers. Klick "Save" to save your changes.

Please note that existing DNS settings may no longer be delivered once the nameservers have been changed unless they have been explicitly adopted! This could cause important services to go offline. If you are unsure, please contact our support team at [email protected].

Mixing nameserver pairs is not permitted. If you only want to enter two or three nameservers here, you must delete the remaining internex nameservers! For redundancy reasons, at least two different nameservers must be entered; this is a binding guideline.

A global nameserver switch can take up to 24 hours.

During the switchover period, it may happen that not all devices immediately access the newly entered nameservers. During the switchover period, for example, your smartphone may still access the previously entered nameservers, while your domain on your PC already redirects to the newly entered nameservers. After the 24-hour period has expired, the newly entered nameservers will be delivered to all devices worldwide.

Please note that it may take a few seconds for the changes to become visible in the customer zone. For example, you may reload the page and still see the old settings. In this case, please wait a few seconds before reloading the page.

For some TLDs, the name server change must be performed manually by the registry. In this case, the old nameservers will still be visible after the change is made via the customer zone until the requested change is successfully completed. For exotic domain endings, the manual change can take several days, as the registry performs this process semi-automatically. For common domain endings such as .at, .com, and .de, the change is implemented immediately.

Depending on the domain registry, there are different specifications and guidelines for how nameservers are operated. For example, it may be necessary for the first and second name servers to be located in different IP ranges, or for the zone to already exist on the name server in order for the name servers to provide an authoritative response.

Therefore, we generally recommend using internex nameservers, which meet all requirements.
